AVA MIX 023 – Princess Glitoris

What was your mindset going into this AVA Mix?

For this mix I really wanted to showcase a bit of all of my favourite genres, being techno, footwork and ghetto house. I’ve been really focusing on creating an energy arc in my sets recently and creating a euphoric feeling that’s constant throughout, keeping the energy high and consistent throughout the mix. In this mix I take you on a journey touching on some of my favourite tunes from throughout the years, whilst the energy and bpm continues to ramp up as it goes on.

Is there a track or moment in the mix that captures where you’re at creatively right now?

I think the blend of Povoa – Herself into Genex – Don’t You Want Me (a bouncier modern remix of the iconic tune by Felix) best describes where I am right now, taking experimental breakbeat styled tunes and mixing them with peak-time club techno. I’ve been really getting into some electro and bass heavy tunes and really enjoying placing them with the heavier techno and tribal sound I consistently circle back to.

How has Belfast shaped your sound and the way you approach DJing?

Growing up in Belfast has had a huge influence on my sound as a DJ. I discovered electronic music here as a teenager, going to dance events and illegal raves from the age of 16 and discovering some of my favourite tunes at parties. I remember hearing tunes at afters such as Tessela – Hackney Parrot and Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo at afters and thinking it was the best thing I’d ever heard at the time, little did I know I had so much more to discover. The city’s underground scene, with its love for hard house and uncompromising techno, shaped my taste early on and that intensity still defines my sets as Princess Glitoris.

What does AVA represent to you as part of Belfast’s wider scene?

AVA was the epitome of dance music for me growing up. I remember seeing Randomer back in 2019 when it was held in the old B&Q building and to this day it’s still one of my favourite sets I’ve ever seen. AVA brings everyone together and it’s always an event that everyone looks forward to each year, not only just for the music and lineups but for the community and energy it brings. Being on the lineup this year for both the festival and this upcoming Halloween is a full circle moment and truly so exciting!

How do you approach building a set? What kind of energy do you want to create for the crowd?

My approach towards building a set changes depending on the gig. I’ll decide the genres I want to explore based on the lineup and the type of crowd the promoter attracts, so I can fit the bill whilst also keeping my personal preferences and style front and centre. I want people to feel happy, moving, and completely immersed. That euphoric, sweaty, can’t-stop-dancing energy that reminds you why you love going out in the first place. I like to play with unexpected twists and turns, pushing between tension and release, hard and playful, familiar and surprising. My favourite sets to attend are high energy throughout or take dramatic switches between genres, so that’s what I aim to create myself. Having played across the lineup from warmups to headline slots, I’ve learned how important it is to know your place in the flow of the night. For me, it’s all about building momentum, giving the crowd what they didn’t know they wanted, and creating those moments where everyone locks in together.

For others coming up in the Belfast scene, what’s something that’s helped you grow and stay inspired?

The number one thing that has helped me grow and learn has 1000% been listening to other DJ’s sets. You learn sooo much just from seeing and hearing other people’s techniques and their approach to mixing, for example, taking two tracks you never would’ve thought of and making something magic out of it. Whether its attending events or listening to mixes online, I think that it’s honestly the best way to stay inspired and learn more other than the obvious practicing of your craft. I can’t stress enough how important it is to go out and support your local scene by attending gigs – not only are you keeping it alive here in Belfast but you’re staying connected with the scene and who knows who you’ll meet along the way by doing so. Practice as much as you can and don’t be afraid of messing up. Trial and error is the best way to learn, and every mix that doesn’t go how you want will teach you something, even if its just to never mix those tunes together again hahaha. As long as your reason for doing it is because you love the music and want to share it with people rather than getting caught up with trying to make something happen for yourself, you can’t really go wrong.

Beyond the decks, what are you excited about right now? Do you have any projects, parties, or collectives you’d like to shout out?

I’m playing my first international gig in a few weeks which I’m super excited about – shoutout to NRG Amsterdam for the call. NRG is founded by PRTY and Reboot Events, both labels from the Republic of Ireland. It’s been really exciting to see how the North and South of Ireland have been collaborating more – I recently had my first gig in Dublin during summer with Circuit Festival and felt super welcomed by all the crew across Influence Collective, LOST and SOAP. I think there’s so many exciting events happening on all corners of the island right now and its really nice to see more collaborations between us all.

What moments or spaces in Belfast have really inspired you recently, whether a night, a venue, or a person?

Rewind Records has to be the most inspirational for me within Belfast’s electronic dance scene, standing out for its authenticity and dedication to the culture that fuels it. Niall (IndeniaL) and Cian stay true to the roots of underground dance music by carefully curating each event with a lineup that reflects their ethos, trusting their DJs to craft a unique soundscape and atmosphere that transforms every night into an immersive experience. They consistently host standout talent like Randomer, DJ Swisherman, and Beau Didier, and even beyond the dancefloor they’re expanding their impact by giving producers across Ireland a platform through collaborative EPs and creative projects, further strengthening the island’s electronic community.

When you think about the future of Belfast’s scene, what do you hope to see more of?

I’d love to see more underground events such as Raw Club which really defines what the underground is all about, hosting incredible DJs without a huge focus on headline names and more about creating a vibe that people can let loose to. The whole vibe up of the venue is crazy and you should definitely go if you get the chance. It would also be sick to see Ireland progress in the future with late opening times at venues and so on, as I think we’re still really far behind the rest of Europe and even parts of the UK when it comes to our outdated laws.
